VETN 100 - Introduction to Veterinary Assisting
Students will be able to perform the functions of a front office/reception staff member in a veterinary hospital. These functions include communicating with clients; scheduling appointments; admitting and discharging patients; and using a practice management software program appropriately for various aspects of the medical record.
Students will be able to identify common breeds of animals seen in veterinary facilities; recognize behavior of various species and respond appropriately with learned handling skills; and perform basic tasks to support the function of the veterinary facility including cleaning, husbandry, and entry level nursing procedures.
Students will be able to competently communicate with clients, take a thorough patient history, and perform a physical exam.

VETN 105 - Veterinary Medical Terminology
Students will be able to recognize veterinary medical terminology through essential word parts and terms that are presented in the context of basic anatomy, physiology, and disease conditions; enabling the student to apply new terms to practical clinical situations.
Students will be able to incorporate veterinary medical terminology into all aspects of their coursework including writing assignments, tests, physical exams, and communication with fellow students and instructors. Terminology is also incorporated into VETN 101 and VETN 110 primarily.
Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to spell veterinary terms correctly. Students will also demonstrate proper pronunciation when using terminology in other classes.

Students will be able to explain the connection of all body systems and how they interact and affect each other.
Students will be able to recognize the anatomical features and their function in each domestic species including the differences between species.
Students will be able to synthesize basic anatomy and physiology principles and apply them to clinical practice.

VETN 130 - Directed Veterinary Assisting Practical
Students will be able to perform the functions of a veterinary assistant as described by the Nevada Veterinary Medical Board while under direct supervision at a designated veterinary facility.
Students will be able to incorporate their knowledge of veterinary practice safety while at the off-site locations including recognizing unsafe animal behavior and zoonotic disease potential, and using appropriate aseptic techniques and guidelines for x-ray safety.
Students will be able to demonstrate professionalism while participating in the daily operation of a partner area veterinary hospital.

VETN 208 - Lab Animal Science and Exotics
Students will be able to define key characteristics for each of the species covered in this class and describe the diseases affecting the various species especially zoonotic diseases.
Students will be able to explain the laws and regulations pertaining to laboratory animal facilities.
Students will be able to safely restrain laboratory animals/pocket pets and perform essential veterinary nursing skills on these animals such as intramuscular and intraperitoneal injections.
VETN 209 - Parasitology
Students will be able to identify and describe parasites that are important to public health safety.
Students will be able to identify internal and external parasites during class lecture and lab time using pictures, preserved specimens, and fresh specimens acquired from outside sources.
Students will be able to describe taxonomy, life cycles, routes of transmission, prevention, and treatment protocols for various parasites.

VETN 235 - Surgical Anesthesia, Nursing & Dental Procedures
Students will be able to demonstrate surgical nursing skills via hands on experience in a lab setting and a mock client interaction.
Students will be able to recognize veterinary dentistry concepts and exposure to hands-on skills in the areas of dental prophylaxis and radiology.
Students will be able to interpret key concepts relating to anesthesia and summarize drug classifications including mode of action and potential side effects.
VETN 240 - Large Animal Procedures
Students will be able to explain concepts of animal husbandry and physical exam criteria for equine, bovine, small ruminant, camelids, and porcine patients.
Students will be able to write about and discuss common diseases for equine, bovine, small ruminant, camelids, and porcine patients. Students will be able to discuss prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases.
Students will be able to recognize and/or perform clinical procedures and surgical techniques when assisting as a veterinary nurse for large animal species.
VETN 250 - Critical Care
