THTR 100 - Introduction to Theatre

Students will be able to identify various theatrical forms and genres in a historical context.

Students will be able to describe the role of theatre as literature and as performance by reading and/or watching plays in performance.

Students will be able to identify and define the function of sets, lights, costumes, props, and sound in theatrical productions.

Students will be able to attain skills to function effectively as responsible, ethical community members and explain the collaborative, cultural, and multidisciplinary nature of theatre arts and artists.

Students will be able to listen, speak, and write competently so as to gain skills to interact effectively with others and to read with comprehension about a broad-range of theatrical terminology.

Students will be able to describe the various historical aspects of the musical theater movement.

Students will be able to interpret and/or create appropriate group presentations of musical theater genres.

Students will be able to analyze films and writings about film as expressions of values within a historical and social context.

Students will be able to exhibit knowledge of the specific substantive area of theater being studied.

Students will be able to synthesize existing knowledge, abilities and skills with new practical skills while gaining theoretical understanding of the substantive area of theater being taught.

THTR 199 - Play Structure & Analysis

Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyze a script for theme, plot, structure, character, and elements of production.

Students will be able to integrate and understand theatrical elements and dramatic structure to create written critiques of works in the theatre.

Students will be able to apply terminology of theatrical storytelling to dramatic literature from a variety of periods and styles.

Students will be able to illustrate the use of textual analysis as it applies to a variety of roles within a theatrical production.
